How to backup and restore wordpress site using Updraftplus Plugin

In the previous article, we’ve shared a list of best WordPress backup plugins and now we’re going to share the complete tutorial on how to backup and restore WordPress site using Updraftplus plugin.Updraftplus is a popular WordPress plugin which gives you a better experience and you don’t have to subscribe its premium version to use its basic features.

For this tutorial we are going to use UpdraftPlus plugin, it is one of the best WordPress plugins which is widely used.Updraftplus comes with two version premium and free, we’re using its free version.

Install Updraftplus WordPress plugin

First, you have to install the Updraft WordPress plugin to begin the process of backup and restore WordPress site.Follow these steps to install the Updraftplus WordPress plugin.

  1. First login to your WordPress Dashboard.
  2. Click on the Plugins>>Add new from the left admin menu.
  3. Search Updraftplus in the Search box and click on the install to install WordPress.

If you’re going to backup WordPress website then store the backup of your website files on your local computer.You can access your file whenever you want and this is more secure than cloud storage.

Follow these steps to install the Updraftplus WordPress plugin.

1.Click on settings tab in the admin menu and then click on UpdraftPlus Backup.

2.Now click on the setting of Updraftplus and select the things you want to include in your backup, you just have to tick the box to select the item for example themes, plugins and more.

3.Once you select the things you want to include in your backup, then click on the current status tab and click on the backup now to take backup WordPress website.

4.Once you have done all these things, now you have to wait for some time.If your website is big and has more than hundred posts and pages then it will take at least 15 minutes.

5.After the waiting time, you can see the backup log in the existing backups tab.You can download these backup files to your local computer by just click on the file you want to download or click on all items to download.

6.Once you save your backup files on your local computer, then delete these files from the WordPress.

The next thing you’ll learn from this tutorial is to schedule your website’s backup and store the backup files to remote storage.For this advance guide, we’re using Google drive because Google provides free subscription up to 15 GB.

Follow these steps to Schedule the Backup WordPress website.

1.Click on settings tab in the admin menu and then click on UpdraftPlus Backup.

2.Now click on the setting of Updraftplus and select the things you want to include in your backup, you just have to tick the box to select the item for example themes, plugins and more.

3.Once you choose the files to include, now select the files and database backup schedule.Select the Weekly schedule of your files and database backup which will retain on your server for 3 days.

4.Now choose your remote storage and select the anyone of them.I choose Google drive you can choose anyone of them from which you’re friendly.

5.The next step is to configure updraft plus and enter the Google drive client ID and Google drives client secret.To find out or generate new client ID and client secret you can read the full tutorial here.

6.Once you generate client Id and client secret, copy and paste it into the empty boxes and click on the save button which is placed in the bottom of the page.

Now your updraftplus is ready to schedule your website backup and store the backup files on Google drive.Google drive is on of the best option when you want to schedule your website’s backup.

Restore a WordPress site from backup

So you have the backup files of your WordPress website and the next thing you’ll need to learn is how to restore a WordPress site from backup?Let’s think about a situation in which hacker will delete your website database and all your files including images and WordPress data.

Now in this case, if you have backup files you can easily restore your website then you can make your site live in just a few minutes.

Follow these steps to restore your WordPress website

1.First, install the updraftplus WordPress plugin to begin the restoring process.

2.Click on settings tab in the admin menu and then click on UpdraftPlus Backup.

3.Now Click on Restore button from Updraftplus plugin dashboard.

4.Now upload the backup files from your local disk or rescan from remote storage.

5.After uploading all the backups file, click on restore button, a popup will appear asking you what you want to restore, just tick everything and on the restore button.
